A few years back I claimed a mare Storm Cat x Forty Niner and she was a real dud I think I got one win from her but because of the breeding I kept her. The first year I used Danzig and got a colt who is graded placed and 4 stakes next year I used Dayjur and have 3 allowances. last ear I used Empire Seeker and has a stakes to her credit. this year I have put Rock Hard Ten to her and hopefully will continue the succes. they are in my bigkev stable and all start with Canunga which was an Army jungle training camp we went through before heading off to Vietnam.

I just looked up that mare, 3 wins in 35 races...wow....she sure has thrown some great ponies for you. Congrads...I just need to start breeding some better blue bloods for the future.

What this shows is that they claim the resulting horse only picks up 50% of the mares ability is plainly not the case as in her case all her foals would be useless

Yeah some people believe that you'll never get good foals out of below average mares. Your example proofs them wrong. I also have one or two so so mares that have produced very well so far.
I think like everything else in this game, you can't generalize, it depends on the horse. My strategy now is to breed every well bred mare I have twice. If they don't produce anything after 2 tries I stop.

For me and my not so sharp on the horse breeding. Are you using your own mares to breed? Of what bonus is this?

Well to start with it is much cheaper as you only have to buy the sire plus a small amount for the ds and dds. But mainly if you have a well bred mare you can use her year after year and hopefully get some good runners
