I like the old timers idea, although I don't know if I have any,
Also how about an all around comp. Pick 1 horse from your stable and have races on turf / dirt, sprint / route.
For a contest without buying races - maybe some type of breeding contest. Bargain breds, or less then 200 bps. something like that.
